Mens briefs is something that is considered as controversial in the United States even if it is the most used mens underwear accross the world. The American see the briefs as something that is unhealthy for the male testicles and is very uncomfortable. From where these thoughs come from I can't tell because according the more recent research the briefs are healthier for the testicles as the boxers which give more room and air. In my opinion the briefs are also more comfortable because your package is under control and you don't have to be worried about unwanted or uncomfortable positions where your genitals can place themselves.
